Hi there and welcome to Proverbs 31 Wannabe. My name is Alexis Heaslip and today we are continuing to discuss connecting the dots messianic prophecy from old to New Testament. We are winding down the series. We are in episode 12, and today is one of the harder days, one of the heavier days, because we are going to be talking about our messiah’s execution. Last episode was rough. We talked about what it meant for Jesus to be scourged and the mocking that he went through and the beating that he went through, and this week again, we see this continuation of our Savior’s suffering. I have quite a few points to go through. This is really scripture heavy today and I’m really excited for that. So let’s dive on in y’all, it’s going to be good, alright, guys. So the first big point that we need to talk about is just how our Savior, our messiah, was executed, and he was executed by means of crucifixion, and I know images of a cross or images of Jesus on the cross wearing a crucifix is really common in our society today. However, during the time of Jesus, when one person thought of a cross, their first thought was death, and the death of the worst kind, reserved for the worst type of people, because to be crucified is like the biggest insult. If you’re going to die, if you are a Roman citizen and you committed a crime, or if you were accused by Caesar of doing something bad, it would just be more honorable to commit suicide or to be beheaded. But if you weren’t a Roman citizen and you were poor and destitute and you were a thief or you did something like murder, your sentence would be crucifixion, which is absolutely horrifying. And the Old Testament does have some prophecies about the death of Messiah via crucifixion. So the first place we want to look at is in the book of Psalms. In Psalm 22, we’re going to read verses 16 and 17. Verse 16 says this my strength is dried up like a clay pot. My tongue clings to my jaws. You lay me in the dust of death, for dogs have surrounded me. A band of evildoers has closed in on me. They pierced my hands and my feet. So we know that our Messiah has hands and his feet are going to be pierced, and we see this theme throughout the Old Testament, as not just in the Psalms, but in the prophets as well. If you’ll turn with me to the book of Isaiah Isaiah, chapter 53, one of the most iconic passages for Messianic prophecy about our suffering servant. We will look at verse 7 and again, I know I’ve talked about this before, but I do have a really amazing in depth study on Isaiah 53 about just the extent that our servants suffered. If you want a copy of this for yourself, check the show notes. I have a link for you there. It is so wonderful. You can do the study as a group, you can do the study as an individual, but you come away with having this in depth knowledge of how our Messiah truly suffered for our sins. So I hope you guys take the chance to check it out. But let’s take a look at Isaiah 53, verse 7, really quickly. He was oppressed and afflicted and yet he didn’t open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter, like sheep before it, sheers is silent. So he did not open his mouth. So, our Savior, he could have cried out, he could have stopped all of this pain and suffering via the most humiliating death, by crucifixion. But he didn’t. He sat there and allowed it to happen and he was led away for the slaughter Again. The book of Zachariah and you know, after doing these studies with you guys, in the past two weeks Zachariah has been coming up so much and, to be honest, I had not been as familiar with the book of Zachariah. But because of us doing all of these studies together, it makes me want to read this full book and I don’t know. Let me know what you guys like to do a study on the book of Zachariah together? I think it would be kind of fun. Let me know, leave me a comment, let me know, because I want to do things that you want to hear. But yes, so let’s turn to the book of Zachariah. We can always come back to that later. But Zachariah, chapter 12, verse 10, tells us this Then I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication when they will look toward me. Whom they pierced? Whom they pierced? So, as you can see, we are told that his hands and feet will be pierced, but he will not open up his mouth to defend himself and Jerusalem will look towards him during this time and this gets played out throughout the Gospels we’re going to look at the book of Matthew to start and then we’ll go from there. So, if you turn with me to Matthew, chapter 27, and we’re looking at verse 35, which tells us this and when they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among themselves by casting lots. So this verse confirms that Jesus was indeed crucified to a cross. And we might get a little bit more information in Luke, if you’ll turn with me to Luke, because that was a very short verse. But that’s what the beauty of the different accounts of the Gospels is that each writer gives us their own unique perspective and we learn something different because the Gospels on their own, each individual gospel, is like a little snippet of Jesus’s ministry. But when we see and read and compare all four of them, we can get more of the bigger picture and I think that’s just so much fun when you realize that all scripture is connected, especially the gospel accounts. You can learn so much more about Jesus when you go in it with that open mind and when you go in with that investigative spirit. So if you’ll turn with me to Luke, 24, verse 39, we read a similar passage. Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself. Touch me and see, for a spirit doesn’t have flesh and bones, as you see I have. So this is when Jesus appeared to the disciples, after he died and after he rose and he’s showing look, my hands and my side were pierced and my feet, and he was proving that he is alive in the flesh and that he was able to show them the marks from his crucifixion. So that’s another piece of this puzzle that we see, and, and now in the book of John we get even more details, even more descriptions, and again it’s like putting all the pieces of a puzzle together and it’s a lot of fun to do so. So first let’s look at John, chapter 19, and you know what, when you, when we’re able to realize it’s like a puzzle we can then talk to our kids about how learning things that are in the Bible and connecting the dots it’s like going on a scavenger hunt With our younger kids. We can you know the story, we’re going on a bear hunt and and you can use that similar concept of that children’s story and apply it to how we can be active in reading the and reading the Bible and use that as an opportunity to teach them that reading the Bible is fun, it’s exciting and there’s always something new to learn, see or do, and I feel like what an amazing opportunity that we have to share this joy with our children. So just like children have fun going on scavenger hunts or solving a mystery, we too, the more we dive into our Bibles, can discover more and learn more about solving this puzzle of our creator, our God. So turn with me to the book of John, chapter 19, verse 8. Let’s start there. Oh, 18, excuse me, verse 18. I read that wrong in my notes. There they crucified him, and with two others, one on each side and Yeshua in between. All right, we got more details. Jesus was crucified and there were two people crucified along with him. Now let’s skip down to verse 34, which tells us this but one of the soldiers, after Jesus had died, pierced His side with a spear and immediately blood and water came out. He who has seen it has testified and his testimony is true. He knows that he is telling the truth so that you may also believe. These things happened for a Specific reason, which we’re going to get to in a little bit. I’m not gonna spoil it just yet. So we get more pieces to the puzzle. And there’s another piece to this puzzle of Jesus being crucified, if you’ll turn with me to to John, chapter 20, because, remember, I Know we’re gonna talk about it again. And another episode he was crucified. Yes, he died, yes, but that’s not the end of the story. So read with me and John, chapter 20 versus 20 through 28. And this is Jesus appearing to the disciples again. We’re gonna get a different perspective. After he said, shalom, peace, be with you, he showed them his hands in his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Yeshua said to them again Shalom Eli him, as the father has sent me, so I also send you. And after he said this, he breathed on them and said receive the Ruach ha Kodesh, the spirit. If you forgive anyone sins, they are forgiven, but if you hold back, they are held back. One of the 12, thomas, called the twin, was not with them when Yeshua came. The other disciples were saying to him we have seen the Lord. But he replied to them unless I see the nail prints in his hands and put my fingers into the marks of the nails and I put my hand in his side, I’ll never believe. Eight days later, the disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Yeshua came Despite the locked doors. He stood in their midst and said Shalom Eli him. Then he said to Thomas put your finger here and look at my hands, reach out your hand and put it into my side, stop doubting and believe. Thomas answered and said my Lord and my God, yeshua, said because you have seen me, you’ve believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. I love talking about this because none of us have actually Seen the risen Lord in the flesh like the disciples, but because we have the full narrative and because we can put these pieces of the puzzles together, we can proclaim that Jesus is a Lord. And it reminds me of this song. I’ll link it in the show notes and it’s such a beautiful song. I think it’s called drops in the ocean. I’m gonna double check on the name, but, uh, some of the lyrics go. If you want to see how much you mean to me, look at my hands, look at my sides. And it talks about If you can count the times, you say that you are forgiven. It’s more than the drops in the ocean and I think that’s so beautiful that when we read how Jesus’s Body was pierced during crucifixion, during his execution, we can be reminded that, even though he went through think these things, he loved us so much that he was willing to go through this and that, no matter how many times we mess up, our sins are forgiven. And before we move on to the next point, will you turn with me to the book of Revelation and you’ll see this is. This is still important, because More things are gonna happen in the time to come, which I believe is coming sooner rather than later. Revelation one, verse seven look, he’s coming with the clouds and every eye will see him. Even those who pierced him and all the tribes of the earth Should mourn because of him. Yes, a man. And in verse eight, I am the alpha and Omega, who is and was and who is to come the almighty. So it is important for us that Jesus’s body was pierced, but because he is pierced, we have the opportunity To worship him as a Lord. So what are you waiting for? What are you waiting for? Second point our Lord was thirsty. Thirsty during his execution, which I think is a really Really important point, because it reminds us that, yes, jesus was fully God, I, but he was also fully man, and we see this in Psalm 22, this being something that is prophesied. And again, verse 15 and 16,. I’m poured out my water, all my bones are disjointed, my heart is like wax melting away with my innards. My strength is dried up like a clay pot. My tongue clings to my jaws. You lay me in the dust of the earth. My tongue clings to my jaws. That means his mouth is just so dry. It’s like the desert. It’s like when you’ve been outside all day playing and you realize you haven’t had water all day and your mouth is parched and oh, it’s awful. You know, if you know that feeling, that’s the feeling, the human feeling, that our Messiah experienced, and we read this in John, chapter 19, verse 28,. If you’ll turn with me there, we read this After this when Yeshua knew that all things would be completed to fulfill scripture, he said I am thirsty, I am thirsty. What a human feeling Jesus felt in that moment the feeling of thirst. Now, the question is he was thirsty, yes, but let’s add more, let’s add another piece to this puzzle he was thirsty, so did anyone provide him with any relief? Now, this is what I think is extremely interesting. He was not given water because, ultimately, he was being executed right? So the end goal was death, not life, and, as we know, water is a symbol of life and living. So, instead of being given water, our Messiah was to be given this type of vinegar mixture to quench his thirst. And I learned a lot of new things when doing my research into this. A lot, a lot of new things. If you’ll turn with me to Psalm 69, you’ll see what I mean Psalm 69, verse 22 or 21, depending on your translation. So in mine it’s verse 22, but I’m using the tree of life version. They put gall in my food and for thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. I had to look up what the word gall meant, because I wasn’t quite sure. The word in English sounds very harsh and like. When I read it it reminded me. It like made my mouth pucker, like when you’re eating something that’s super sour, like a warhead and something that’s repugnant. And when I looked up the definition, it meant bitterness or poison is what the word meant. And then one of my study notes said that this gall that they’re talking about could have been this wine that was mixed with bitter myrrh and vinegar. And when you think of myrrh in the Bible and in the story of Jesus, the first thing that came to my mind was when he was a baby and the three wise men came and what was one of the gifts that was given to Jesus, myrrh. And why is this important? Myrrh is also a spice used for burial used for burial. So this use of this gall, which had myrrh and vinegar, just really emphasizes the fact that our Lord is about to die, and I thought you know that was just a really interesting detail that God has given us in His scriptures, and when you make connections like this, it just makes you go aha and to see this in the New Testament. Turn with me to Matthew 27. And we’re going to be looking at verse 34. Remember when I said I’m not finishing that verse. Let’s finish that verse together now, matthew 27. Oops, one more Verse 34. They offered him wine with mixed gall to drink, but after tasting he was unwilling to drink it. I wouldn’t want to drink it either. It sounds like it tastes bitter and yucky and awful. Now this fourth point I thought was really interesting, because we know that Jesus was scourged and we talked about that, but it didn’t occur to me that during the scourging not one bone was broken, and it’s actually prophesied that our Messiah was to be executed without having any bone broken in his entire body. And there’s actually quite a few Old Testament scriptures that talk about this and I would have never thought that such what seems to be a small detail could be so so important and some of the scripture we’re gonna look at it’s a lot to take in. So let’s start first with something that’s easier to read and talk about. Psalm 34, verse 20, tells us this many are the distresses and righteous, but Adonai delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones. Not one of them is broken. That was in the Psalms, this prophecy about how our Messiah would keep all of his bones. But where is this significant? Why is this significant? I had no clue at first why this was so significant, but we have to go all the way back to the book of Exodus to get so much mind-blowing clarity Mind-blowing clarity. I’m not gonna read all of it because this is a big passage of scripture, but Exodus, chapter 12 gives us all the details that God gave to Moses about what the Passover lamb, what qualities it needs to have in order for it to be an acceptable offering. I highly suggest you go through Exodus 12 and read about all of these different needs that the Israelites had to have in order for this lamb to be an acceptable offering for the Lord, so that God would pass over their households. But specifically, let’s look at verse 46, and verse 46 tells us this, and when you hear this it’s gonna blow your mind it is to be eaten inside a single house the lamb. You’re not to carry the meat out of the house, you are not to break its bones. The lamb offering needed to be perfect, with no broken bones. And how could Jesus be our ultimate lamb, ultimate sin, ultimate guilt offering if his bones were broken? He couldn’t. He couldn’t. And we see this again reflected in the book of numbers, chapter 9, verse 12, which tells us this oops, where is it there? They are not to leave any of it until morning or break any bones when they celebrate Passover there, to observe all of its regulations. Again, it is emphasized that the bones of the sacrificial lamb cannot be broken. Jesus is our ultimate Passover lamb and was prepared for sacrifice in this way that God told Moses to sacrifice the Passover lamb. But Jesus is our ultimate, our ultimate sacrifice. And I want us to read Psalm I’m serious, we already read that and we see this fulfilled in John, chapter 19. If you’ll turn with me, I’m getting there and we’re going to start at verse 31, because it’s so critical that we have this understanding and this is why, my friends, I just feel like it is imperative that we, as Christians, have this understanding of the Old Testament, because we cannot understand the weight of Jesus’s sacrifice if we don’t understand the Old Testament. It just oh. I get so excited and pumped about this. But let’s start John 19. Let’s start at verse 31. It was the day of preparation, and the next day was a festival, shabbat, so that, all so that the body should not remain on the execution stake during Shabbat, the Judean leaders asked Pilate to have the legs broken and to have the bodies taken away. So the soldiers came up and broke the legs of the first and then the other who’d been executed with Yeshua. Now, when they came to Yeshua and saw he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear and immediately blood and water poured out. I’m gonna pause, really for just a quick minute. It’s important that we know that it was blood and water, because if Jesus was still alive, it would have just been blood that poured out, but the water shows us that Jesus had died already. He who has seen it has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he is telling the truth so that you may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled. Not a bone of his will be broken. And again another scripture says they shall look on him whom they have pierced. Alright. Last thing, last point for today, is that our Messiah would be looked as a transgressor. And again Isaiah 53 tells us this that our Lord would be looked upon as a sinner, as a transgressor, as someone who was dirty and yucky. But we know that’s not true. Isaiah 53, verse 12, part of it tells us, because he poured out with his soul to death and was counted with transgressors for he bore the sins of many and interceded for the transgressors. So yes, jesus was considered a transgressor, he was considered a sinner. And because he was considered a transgressor and he was not a citizen of Rome, he was given the death of a transgressor. And we read this in Matthew 27, verse 3, and we talked about an honorable death versus the death of a transgressor. And Jesus was given the most shameful, disgraceful way to die. We read this, matthew 27, verse 3, and we see how he was given this. And then Judas was given this false remorse and he brought the silver back saying I’ve sinned, betraying innocent blood, but they didn’t care. But they didn’t care because he was counted among the transgressors. And Luke, chapter 23, verse 32 we read this 23, verse 32 others, two evil doers, were also led away to be put to death with him. So Jesus was put to death among evil men what the world would consider evil and was treated like one of the most nastiest, yuckiest person that we can imagine being on death row today. But we know that that’s not true. We know that he was our spotless victim, our Passover lamb. So, yes, there was a lot of heavy material, but we discovered that when we realized that the Bible is like a scavenger hunt and we have this childlike faith and enthusiasm for the gospel, we can get excited about learning about all the things that our Savior did for us, because one day he’s coming back with his hands, his feet and his side that are pierced and he will say where’s your faith? And I pray that when that happens we will be the ones to say that we already know you are Lord. We already knew, without having to see you, that you are Lord. That is my prayer for you guys and that is my prayer that we, as the adults in the faith, were able to convey this message to our children so that they can come to know the Lord and love the Lord, and that those who are adults or teenagers who don’t know God, they can see the way that we live our life and they can go huh, something’s different with them. I want to know why. I want to know why. That is my hope, that is my prayer. Thank you, guys for listening to Proverbs 31 1 B. We hope you enjoyed the show.
